"I came into Midwifery as a Mature student – I realised I wanted to become a Midwife when I went through my own pregnancies, but the timing wasn’t right for me with young children, so I had to put my dreams on a back burner until they were older. When I later revisited the idea and decided to apply I was accepted on my first and only application which led me to study at the University of Nottingham where I began my training at Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield in 2004.
Studying to become a Midwife takes 3 years and is hard work as you juggle working shifts on your placements whilst studying, writing assignments and revising for exams. In those days we didn’t study to a Degree level so I qualified in 2007 with a Distinction in a Diploma in Midwifery Studies and began my career as a Midwife at the Nottingham University Hospital Trust based at the City Hospital.
My role as a Rotational Midwife-led to me working on both Labour Suite and on the wards caring for women through all stages of their pregnancy, labour and early postnatal periods. The ward where I was placed specialised in providing “Transitional Care” so I gained a lot of experience in the care of sick or premature babies and their mums. These mums tended to stay with us longer and need a lot of support through some anxious times. This is where my love of Aromatherapy blossomed – we were most fortunate in the Trust to be trained to use essential oils in our practice as a way to support women with various issues they may face during the pregnancy journey. On every shift I worked I would enjoy blending oils to provide compresses for the breastfeeding issues or soreness after giving birth and the women loved them.
In 2012 I set up Natural Birthing Company with another Midwife to provide local Antenatal Classes and due to our love of Aromatherapy and all things natural we decided to also develop our own range of natural products to support pregnant women and new mums.
When I became a senior Midwife I decided undertake studying as a Post Graduate back at the University of Nottingham alongside working part-time as a Midwife and running Natural Birthing Company this resulted in my achievement of a First Class Honours Degree in Midwifery Studies in 2014, the same year that we launched our new range of products – it was a busy time!
The business grew rapidly and after securing investors through a local Dragons Den I left the NHS in 2015 to focus on Natural Birthing Company. I wanted to still be able to work as a Midwife alongside the business so I joined NHS Professionals where I now enjoy being able to work as an Agency Midwife alongside my NHS colleagues in Nottingham."
