About Future Health Biobank

Future Health Biobank is the largest private cord blood bank in the UK. Since their conception in 2002 they have processed and stored more than 125,000 samples from 75 countries worldwide, which is more than all other UK banks combined. Future Health Biobank is also the world’s most accredited bank and the only company to solely own two storage facilities, one in the UK and the other in Switzerland.

What is umbilical cord stem cell banking?

Umbilical cord stem cell banking involves collecting the cord blood from the umbilical cord following the birth of the baby. This is a non-invasive procedure for both mother and baby. Cord blood is a rich source of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), these stem cells can only be collected at the time of birth.

What can cord blood be used for?

Cord blood has been used as a successful treatment since 1988 for over 40,000 people worldwide. These samples of cord blood have been used to treat over 85 blood disorders such as leukaemia, lymphoma, severe combined immune disorder and anaemia. There are also many common illnesses in clinical trial for diseases such as diabetes, cerebral palsy, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis and tissue regeneration.

Will I need to change my birth plan?

Cord blood banking does not interfere with your birth plan and you can still opt for delayed clamping, a water birth, home birth or C-section as the samples are collected after the baby and placenta have both been safely delivered.

Why should I store my baby’s cord blood?

Whether you have a family history of blood disorders, know somebody that has required a stem cell treatment or simply want to safeguard your child’s future health, cord blood banking is a unique and non-invasive way to ensure you have a sample that will be a 100% match to your baby and a potential match for other family members.

Should the day ever arise where you may require the sample for treatment, Future Health Biobank will arrange to ship the sample anywhere in the world free of charge. To date, Future Health Biobank have successfully released 25 samples for treatment to Europe, the Middle East and the USA.

Success story

Laith Abu Areesh was sadly diagnosed with a condition called fanconi’s anaemia; this is an autosomal recessive disorder that has the potential to lead to bone marrow failure. Laith’s younger sister was born in 2010 and Future Health Biobank collected, tested and processed her stem cells. They were proven to be a match for Laith and a stem cell transfusion took place.

The transfusion was a great success and today Laith is able to live a happy and healthy life.
